This January, we launched our newly designed Seed & Bulb Propagation Workshop—and it was a resounding success! The workshop was specially designed for traditional healers in the Bulwer area, offering them valuable skills to enhance their knowledge of seed and bulb propagation.
Bridging Tradition with Sustainable Practices
Traditional healers primarily rely on cuttings from medicinal trees, harvesting plants themselves, or purchasing from muthi markets. However, sustainable propagation methods are crucial to preserving these medicinal plants for future generations. Our workshop aimed to provide hands-on training, equipping them with the skills needed to cultivate these plants from seeds and bulbs rather than relying solely on harvesting mature specimens.
Hands-On Learning and Empowerment
The response from participants was overwhelming! Traditional healers were overjoyed to receive practical training on:
✅ Sowing seeds correctly
✅ Transplanting seedlings
✅ Collecting seeds for future growth
To get them started, we introduced two key medicinal plant species:
🌱 Eucomis autumnalis (Pineapple Lily)
🌱 Merwilla plumbea (Blue Squill)
Both plants hold high value in traditional medicine, and by learning to propagate them, healers can ensure a sustainable supply while reducing pressure on wild populations.
This workshop marks just the beginning of an initiative aimed at empowering communities with sustainable plant propagation techniques. With continued training and support, we hope to see these skills flourish—just like the seeds planted during our workshop!
Stay tuned for more updates on our journey toward sustainable traditional healing practices.
